How to tell if your tree is dead? Here are five signs to tell if your tree is dead or dying. This is a very common question so this is a quick check for you to do to see if any of these line up with your tree's condition.

Dead Tree
1. No Leaves - If all of the trees around it are green and leafy and it has very few or no leaves. Unless it is very early in the year or the other trees are evergreen trees, this is an easy to spot problem.

2. Fungus Growth - If there are mushrooms growing out of the bark of the tree trunk, it is probably a goner. Fungus grows on decomposing organic tissue. This means your tree has been dead long enough to start decaying and may be a real hazard. Look at tree removal to be a very possible choice.

3. Dirt in the Tree - If there is dirt formations on the tree trunk, especially higher up. This can be a visual sign of termite damage. Termites can either do a minimal amount of damage or they can hollow out and entire tree trunk. Get an arborist to inspect your tree to verify the extent of the damage.

4. Bare Bark Areas - If large spots of your tree are missing bark, your tree may already be dead. This happens when a tree starts to dehydrate and the bark falls to the ground.

5. Sudden Decline in Leaves - If your tree has suddenly dropped a lot of leaves during the growing season, it is clearly a bad sign. Recent root excavations, herbicide applications, or lightning strikes could be the cause. These trees may still be saved, so get an inspection first before deciding on removal. Tree fertilization can help trees recover in the early stages of decline.

If you have seen any of these tree issues or are still worried and want a second opinion, please contact us today to schedule an appointment. Big Bark Tree Care operates in Baton Rouge, New Orleans, and everywhere in Louisiana between. We can inspect your tree and let you know your options.

It was really helpful when you said that fungus growth could be a sign. Mushrooms have been growing around my tree for a while now. I'll have to look into hiring a tree service to come and remove it from my yard.

It makes sense that one sign of a dying tree is falling leaves when they should be growing. There are two trees in my backyard that are losing all their needles. I'll have to hire an arborist to remove the tree.

I'm grateful to learn that mushrooms growing on the trunk is a sign your tree is dying because fungus grows on dying tissue. When I was visiting my aunt's house last weekend, I noticed some mushrooms growing on the bottom of her oak tree. I'll call her and recommend she find a tree removal service to help.

Thanks for helping me learn when a tree needs to be removed. I had no idea that if a tree is showing a rapid decline in leaves and missing pieces of bark, the tree might be dead already. My friend has this old oak tree in his yard and he did notice these symptoms before. I'll share this with him and suggest that he hire residential tree removal services before the tree becomes a liability.

Thank you for explaining how the presence of fungus on your tree may suggest that your tree hasn't been alive for a considerable amount of time and that you should consider having it removed. My wife and I have noticed that our pet Chihuahua has been sniffing the mushrooms that have started to grow around the base of our oak tree, and we'd like to make sure that the tree doesn't fall on him during an incoming windstorm. Maybe hiring an expert to get rid of the tree would be a good idea.

It's helpful to know that fungus indicates our tree is dead since it grows on decomposing tissue. I noticed some small mushrooms sprouting out from the trunk of the hardwood tree in my front yard. Thanks for letting me know I should have the tree looked at by a professional and potentially removed soon to keep my family safe.

I had no idea that a lack of bark on some parts of your trees may indicate that it has become dehydrated. My cousin recently noticed that large pieces of bark have been falling off of his pine tree, and he is worried that the lack of rain may be causing the tree to decay. Maybe he should remove the tree before it can sustain any further damages.

Thank you for explaining that a sudden decline in leaves can be a sign that your tree is dead. I've noticed that there are a few trees on our property that don't have as many leaves as they usually do. I'll be sure to find someone to help us with getting those trees removed or treated.

Thank you for explaining that sudden dead leaves can be a bad sign for your tree. I've been wondering why some of the newer trees on our property look like they either aren't growing leaves or the leaves are prematurely falling. I'll be sure to mention this to the arborist when they come to take a look.

A few days ago, I had dinner at my parent's house and noticed how one of their trees looked odd, and I think it had some mushrooms growing around it. I'm shocked to learn how a dead tree could look just like my parent's one, so I'll call them now and suggest they find a tree expert right away. Thank you for the tips on how fungus grows is a clear sign of a diseased tree.
